Pediatric Advanced Life Support

Introduction

In this section of your PALS course, we’ll be breaking down what you can expect from this course. The first lesson is merely a welcome message, while the second lesson gets into your course objectives, which are two-fold: assessment – to train all healthcare providers to recognize respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary emergencies in pediatric patients. And treatment – to train all healthcare providers to intervene with high-quality individual and team skills.

Resuscitation Team Dynamics

In this section of your PALS course, you’ll be learning about resuscitation team dynamics. In the first lesson, you’ll learn how high-functioning teams operate, including a breakdown of the individual roles and responsibilities for each. In the second lesson, you’ll learn the keys to practicing effective communication, and more specifically, we’ll be teaching you some techniques to help you achieve this vital element for positive patient outcomes.

BLS for Infants and Children

In this section of your PALS course, you’ll be learning how to conduct BLS (basic life support) for children and infants. You’ll find lessons on child CPR and infant CPR, AED for infants, two-rescuer CPR for children, and neonatal BLS. By the end of this section, you should be comfortable with all of the skills necessary to perform basic life support on children and infants.

Patient Assessment and Respiratory Management

In this section of your PALS course, you’ll learn how to respond to respiratory emergencies in younger patients. Lesson one will provide you with a broad view of respiratory PALS emergencies. Lesson two will look at some helpful tools for monitoring and oxygenating patients. In lesson three, you’ll learn about basic and advanced airways, including some common examples of each and things to pay attention to when using them. And finally, in lesson four, you’ll learn how to recognize conditions quickly in ill or injured children.

Cardiac Arrhythmias

In this section of your PALS course, we’ll be digging deeper into cardiac arrhythmias. In the first lesson, we’ll cover the cardiac conduction system and all of its components. In subsequent lessons, you’ll learn about ECG interpretation and specific rhythms, which include: normal sinus rhythm, bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, SVT, AV blocks, AFib and VFib, atrial flutter, wide complex tachycardia, asystole, and PEA (pulseless electrical activity). By the end of this section, you should be comfortable identifying and treating each of these PALS arrhythmias.

PALS Pharmacology

In this section of your PALS course, we’ll be introducing you to several PALS pharmacological agents. In the first lesson, we’re going to cover the current PALS pharmacological treatment options and go over some important things to keep in mind as you progress through this section of your course. And in the lessons that follow, you’ll learn about each PALS medication: adenosine, amiodarone, atropine, dopamine, epinephrine, lidocaine, magnesium sulfate, oxygen, and procainamide.

Case Studies

In this section of your PALS course, our focus will shift to case studies. We’ll get into specifics of treating PALS patients for bradycardia, tachycardia, respiratory distress, respiratory arrest, pulseless arrest, and asystole. We’ll also cover in more detail child AED, infant two-rescuer CPR, and identifying and treating patients who are in shock.

Post Cardiac Arrest Care

In this section of your PALS course, we’ll cover the goals after the return of spontaneous circulation (also known as ROSC), including the two phases of treatment post-resuscitation to help ensure the patient’s future survival and long-term care. And finally, in the last lesson, we’ll provide you with a few tips to properly maintain the mental muscles you’ve built up throughout this course.
